How to unblock DuckDuckGo in Indonesia

Getting DuckDuckGo working in Indonesia takes about five minutes. You need a VPN that can get past the block, and we use Proton VPN below.

Short answer

Use Proton VPN, connect to Singapore, then open DuckDuckGo.

We picked Proton VPN because it's the best fit for DuckDuckGo here: swiss-based with open-source apps and a free tier, plus a Stealth protocol for restrictive networks.

Why DuckDuckGo doesn't work in Indonesia

DuckDuckGo has been blocked in Indonesia since 2024. Blocked over gambling and adult content in search results.

Under-16s have been restricted from major social platforms since 28 March 2026; adults can use them normally.

Is a VPN legal in Indonesia? Legal. VPN use is legal for adults.

Step by step with Proton VPN

  1. Install and sign in

Install Proton VPN on the phone or computer where you use DuckDuckGo, then sign in.

  2. Check the protocol

Leave the protocol on Smart (the default) for the best speed.

  3. Connect to a nearby server

Connect to a server in Singapore, Japan or Taiwan. DuckDuckGo works normally in these countries, and nearby servers are faster.

  4. Open DuckDuckGo

Search should work as soon as the VPN connects.

  5. Leave the VPN on

Keep Proton VPN connected while you use DuckDuckGo. If you disconnect, the block applies again.

Tip: The DuckDuckGo app has its own tracker blocking, which works alongside the VPN.

If it still doesn't work

  • Force-close DuckDuckGo and open it again after the VPN connects.
  • Try another server in the same country.
  • Turn off your browser's or phone's "private DNS" setting if it overrides the VPN.
