VPN server locations: real or virtual?
When a VPN says it has a server in Pakistan or Vietnam, the hardware is often in Singapore or Hong Kong. That's a "virtual location". Here is where each of six VPNs really has servers across the 130 countries we track, taken from their own server lists.
By VPN
| VPN | In the country | Virtual | No server | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN servers | 46 +12 unstated | 44 | 28 | 19 Oct 2026 |
| ExpressVPN servers | 41 | 42 | 47 | 18 Oct 2026 |
| Surfshark servers | 45 | 29 | 56 | 19 Oct 2026 |
| Proton VPN servers | 51 | 69 | 10 | 18 Oct 2026 |
| CyberGhost servers | 24 +37 unstated | 15 | 54 | 18 Oct 2026 |
| Private Internet Access servers | 43 | 38 | 49 | 19 Oct 2026 |
Counts cover only the countries we track. NordVPN, Surfshark and Private Internet Access refresh daily from their public server lists; the others are checked by hand.
