How to unblock Telegram in Nepal

Getting Telegram working in Nepal takes about five minutes. You need a VPN that can get past the block, and we use Proton VPN below.

Short answer

Use Proton VPN, connect to Singapore, then open Telegram.

We picked Proton VPN because it's the best fit for Telegram here: swiss-based with open-source apps and a free tier, plus a Stealth protocol for restrictive networks.

Why Telegram doesn't work in Nepal

Telegram has been blocked in Nepal since Jul 2025.

Telegram has been banned since July 2025; a five-day block on 26 social platforms in September 2025 was lifted after deadly protests.

Is a VPN legal in Nepal? Legal. VPN use is legal.

Step by step with Proton VPN

  1. Install and sign in

Install Proton VPN on the phone or computer where you use Telegram, then sign in.

  2. Check the protocol

Leave the protocol on Smart (the default) for the best speed.

  3. Connect to a nearby server

Connect to a server in Singapore, Japan or Netherlands. Telegram works normally in these countries, and nearby servers are faster.

  4. Open Telegram and let it reconnect

The "Connecting…" banner should disappear within a few seconds of the VPN connecting.

  5. Leave the VPN on

Keep Proton VPN connected while you use Telegram. If you disconnect, the block applies again.

Tip: Telegram also supports MTProto proxies (Settings, then Data and Storage, then Proxy) as a backup when VPNs are struggling.

If it still doesn't work

  • Turn off your browser's or phone's "private DNS" setting if it overrides the VPN.
  • Force-close Telegram and open it again after the VPN connects.
  • Try another server in the same country.
