Real vs virtual: what it means for you
A server in the country gives the best speed for local sites and the most reliable local IP. A virtual location still shows sites a China IP address, so it works for most local services and prices, but traffic travels to the real server first, and that country's laws apply to the hardware.
Using a VPN inside China: Legal with restrictions. Only government-approved VPNs are legal. Enforcement against individual tourists is rare, but VPN traffic is actively detected and slowed, especially around political anniversaries.
Questions people ask
Does any VPN have servers in China?
None of the six VPNs we track lists a server physically in China. ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access offer a virtual China location: you get an IP address registered to China, but the server sits in another country.
What is a virtual server location?
A virtual location gives you an IP address registered to the country you pick, while the server itself runs in a nearby country with better infrastructure. Sites usually see you as being in that country, but speed depends on the real location, and data is handled under that country's laws.
Can I get a China IP address with a VPN?
Yes, with ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access.
