Real vs virtual: what it means for you

A server in the country gives the best speed for local sites and the most reliable local IP. A virtual location still shows sites a Eritrea IP address, so it works for most local services and prices, but traffic travels to the real server first, and that country's laws apply to the hardware.

Using a VPN inside Eritrea: Legal with restrictions. There is no clear VPN law, and internet café use is monitored.

Questions people ask

Does any VPN have servers in Eritrea?

None of the six VPNs we track lists a server physically in Eritrea. Proton VPN offers a virtual Eritrea location: you get an IP address registered to Eritrea, but the server sits in another country.

What is a virtual server location?

A virtual location gives you an IP address registered to the country you pick, while the server itself runs in a nearby country with better infrastructure. Sites usually see you as being in that country, but speed depends on the real location, and data is handled under that country's laws.

Can I get a Eritrea IP address with a VPN?

Yes, with Proton VPN.
