How to unblock TikTok in Hong Kong

Getting TikTok working in Hong Kong takes about five minutes. You need a VPN that can get past the block, and we use Proton VPN below.

Short answer

Use Proton VPN, connect to Japan, then open TikTok.

We picked Proton VPN because it's the best fit for TikTok here: swiss-based with open-source apps and a free tier, plus a Stealth protocol for restrictive networks.

Why TikTok doesn't work in Hong Kong

TikTok has been blocked in Hong Kong since Jul 2020. TikTok withdrew from the market.

Google, WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram all work; TikTok withdrew in 2020 and some political sites are blocked.

Is a VPN legal in Hong Kong? Legal. VPNs are legal.

Step by step with Proton VPN

  1. Install and sign in

Install Proton VPN on the phone or computer where you use TikTok, then sign in.

  2. Check the protocol

Leave the protocol on Smart (the default) for the best speed.

  3. Connect to a nearby server

Connect to a server in Japan, South Korea or Taiwan. TikTok works normally in these countries, and nearby servers are faster.

  4. Open TikTok and refresh your feed

If the app still says it can't connect, force-close it and open it again, or clear its cache.

  5. Leave the VPN on

Keep Proton VPN connected while you use TikTok. If you disconnect, the block applies again.

Tip: Use the app rather than the website if the site keeps redirecting to a block page.
