How to unblock TikTok in India

If TikTok won't work in India, you're not alone: it has been blocked since Jun 2020. Here's how to get it back with Proton VPN, one step at a time.

Short answer

Use Proton VPN, connect to Singapore, then open TikTok.

We picked Proton VPN because it's the best fit for TikTok here: swiss-based with open-source apps and a free tier, plus a Stealth protocol for restrictive networks.

Try Proton VPN

Why TikTok doesn't work in India

TikTok has been blocked in India since Jun 2020.

TikTok and hundreds of Chinese apps have been banned since 2020, and India leads the world in regional internet shutdowns.

Is a VPN legal in India? Legal. VPN use is legal, but 2022 CERT-In rules require providers to keep user logs. Many VPNs, including NordVPN, Proton VPN and Surfshark, removed physical Indian servers in response.

Step by step with Proton VPN

  1. Install and sign in

Install Proton VPN on the phone or computer where you use TikTok, then sign in.

  2. Check the protocol

Leave the protocol on Smart (the default) for the best speed.

  3. Connect to a nearby server

Connect to a server in Singapore, Japan or Netherlands. TikTok works normally in these countries, and nearby servers are faster.

  4. Open TikTok and refresh your feed

If the app still says it can't connect, force-close it and open it again, or clear its cache.

  5. Leave the VPN on

Keep Proton VPN connected while you use TikTok. If you disconnect, the block applies again.

Tip: Use the app rather than the website if the site keeps redirecting to a block page.

If it still doesn't work

  • Force-close TikTok and open it again after the VPN connects.
  • Try another server in the same country.
  • Turn off your browser's or phone's "private DNS" setting if it overrides the VPN.

Or try another VPN

NordVPN Connects

Leave the protocol on NordLynx (the default). You don't need obfuscation for this block.

Private Internet Access Connects
