How to unblock WhatsApp in Equatorial Guinea

If WhatsApp won't work in Equatorial Guinea, you're not alone: it has been partly blocked since Nov 2024. Here's how to get it back with ExpressVPN, one step at a time.

Short answer

Use ExpressVPN with its protocol set to Automatic, connect to South Africa, then open WhatsApp.

We picked ExpressVPN for Equatorial Guinea because it can disguise VPN traffic with automatic obfuscation (with the protocol on Automatic).

Why WhatsApp doesn't work in Equatorial Guinea

WhatsApp has been partly blocked in Equatorial Guinea since Nov 2024. Photo and video downloads blocked on mobile data.

Facebook and TikTok have been blocked nationwide since early September 2026, and WhatsApp media downloads on mobile data have been restricted since late 2024.

Is a VPN legal in Equatorial Guinea? Legal with restrictions. There is no published VPN law, but authorities treat online criticism harshly and have arrested people over social media posts.

Step by step with ExpressVPN

  1. Get the VPN before you need it

Sign up for ExpressVPN and download the app while you still have an open connection, ideally before you arrive in Equatorial Guinea. VPN websites and app-store listings are often blocked there.

  2. Install and sign in

Install ExpressVPN on the phone or computer where you use WhatsApp, then sign in.

  3. Switch on its stealth mode

Open Settings, then Protocol, and keep it on Automatic. ExpressVPN obfuscates every server, and Automatic lets it switch protocols when one gets blocked.

  4. Connect to a nearby server

Connect to a server in South Africa, France or Germany. WhatsApp works normally in these countries, and nearby servers are faster.

  5. Open WhatsApp and send a message

Messages should send straight away. If calls are the problem, make a test call with the VPN on and keep it connected for the whole call.

  6. Leave the VPN on

Keep ExpressVPN connected while you use WhatsApp. If you disconnect, the block applies again.

Tip: WhatsApp also has built-in proxy support (Settings, then Storage and data, then Proxy). A proxy can help when a VPN struggles, but it doesn't hide your traffic the way a VPN does.

If it still doesn't work

  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Some networks block far more than others.
  • Try a different server country: South Africa, France or Germany.
  • Restart your phone after a failed attempt. Some blocks cache your earlier connection.
  • Update the VPN app. Providers update their stealth protocols when blocks change.

Or try another VPN

NordVPN Connects

Open Settings, go to Connection, then VPN protocol, and choose NordWhisper. If your device doesn't offer NordWhisper, choose OpenVPN (TCP) and connect to a server under Specialty servers, then Obfuscated servers.

Surfshark Connects

Open Settings, then VPN settings, and switch on NoBorders mode. If connections still drop, set the protocol to OpenVPN (TCP), which adds Surfshark's Camouflage obfuscation.
