How to unblock WhatsApp in Oman

WhatsApp is partly blocked in Oman. The fix that works for most people is a VPN, and Proton VPN is the one we recommend here.

Short answer

Use Proton VPN, connect to Germany, then open WhatsApp.

We picked Proton VPN because it's the best fit for WhatsApp here: swiss-based with open-source apps and a free tier, plus a Stealth protocol for restrictive networks.

Try Proton VPN

Why WhatsApp doesn't work in Oman

WhatsApp is partly blocked in Oman. Messaging works; calls usually blocked.

WhatsApp calls and most VoIP are blocked, though enforcement has been inconsistent since late 2024.

Is a VPN legal in Oman? Legal with restrictions. Only licensed apps and services are officially allowed; personal VPN use is not clearly addressed in law.

Step by step with Proton VPN

  1. Install and sign in

Install Proton VPN on the phone or computer where you use WhatsApp, then sign in.

  2. Check the protocol

Leave the protocol on Smart (the default) for the best speed.

  3. Connect to a nearby server

Connect to a server in Germany, Netherlands or Switzerland. WhatsApp works normally in these countries, and nearby servers are faster.

  4. Open WhatsApp and send a message

Messages should send straight away. If calls are the problem, make a test call with the VPN on and keep it connected for the whole call.

  5. Keep it connected during calls

In Oman it's mainly calls that are blocked. Keep the VPN on for the whole call, or the call will drop.

Tip: WhatsApp also has built-in proxy support (Settings, then Storage and data, then Proxy). A proxy can help when a VPN struggles, but it doesn't hide your traffic the way a VPN does.

Try Proton VPN

If it still doesn't work

  • Turn off your browser's or phone's "private DNS" setting if it overrides the VPN.
  • Force-close WhatsApp and open it again after the VPN connects.
  • Try another server in the same country.

Or try another VPN

Private Internet Access Connects

Leave the protocol on WireGuard (the default) for the best speed.

Try Private Internet Access

NordVPN Connects
