What's going on
Niger's military government, in power since July 2023, suspended the BBC for three months in December 2024 and on 8 May 2026 suspended nine French outlets, among them France 24, RFI, AFP, TV5 Monde and Jeune Afrique, covering their websites and apps as well as broadcasts. Human Rights Watch says media freedom has been severely restricted since the coup, with journalists detained in 2025. Global social and messaging apps are not blocked.
